It’s a learning experience. It’s home to five coastal habitats and Southern California’s only coastal prairie habitat. It’s an oasis. It’s an environmental cleaning machine for the ocean. It’s the heart of Malibu. It’s one smart park. The Malibu Legacy Park Project is a multi-benefit project for the environment and the community. The project responds to four critical needs: (1) bacteria reduction by stormwater treatment, (2) restoration and development of riparian habitats, and (3) the development of an open space area for passive recreation and environmental education. The Malibu Legacy Park Project will be constructed in the Civic Center area, directly adjacent to significant natural resources, a location which is a point of interest to various regulatory agencies, environmental groups and the citizens because of the unique opportunity to simultaneously improve water quality, restore native riparian habitat and preserve open space. Seizing a truly once-in-a-lifetime environmental protection and quality-of-life opportunity, Malibu residents, civic and business organizations, environmental groups, visitors, government agencies and the City Council banded together and against a short deadline raised the $25 million purchase price. Private donors gave nearly $2.5 million. In 2006 the City took ownership and began project planning. In 2007, the City again turned to the community for financial support for the construction of the Malibu Legacy Park Project. The Annenberg Foundation awarded the City a $2,000,000 matching grant in 2008. The project enjoys widespread community support. For more information contact Susan Shaw Noble, 310.456.2489. |
